2015 December Newsletter

Matthew Hunt named the Germantown Legends Competitive Player of the Month for November 2015.

Matthew Hunt began playing soccer in church league when he was four and has played for his school, Evangelical Christian School (ECS), since sixth grade. He has been on the ECS varsity soccer team since he was a freshman, appearing in the Tennessee State Scholastic Athletic Association (TSSAA) state semi-finals in 2014 and 2015.

Matthew has been playing with the Germantown Legends boys’ competitive soccer team since its inception in 2011, when he was in 7th grade.  Currently, he is a member of the U18 Legends Black team.

“On the field”, stated Coach Kirk Dunaway, “Matthew Hunt is definitely a very valuable player for us, as his goals and assists (25 goals and 9 assists in 23 games) can attest to. He is also a leader by example, in both his hard work and attendance.”

Coach Dunaway continued, “Matthew is a fine young man and player.  He is one of our informal leaders whose dedication and hard work have definitely paid off. In the past two seasons, Matthew has hit for 40 goals in 40 matches… that is fantastic at any level.”

Matthew also takes the field as a referee for the U8 teams and holds his USSF Youth Module Soccer Coaching License.

Off the field, Matthew is involved in the Spanish Club, Streets Ministries and serves as an Usher at his church and Student Ambassador for school.

In the past seasons, he has volunteered with TOPS Soccer, Target House, Christ Feeds and SOS.  Matthew, a junior at ECS, maintains a high GPA while taking Honors classes.  He is hard-working, disciplined, passionate and inquisitive student.

Matthew enjoys mentoring and playing soccer with younger children in Nicaragua who look forward to his annual visits.

Congratulations to Matthew Hunt on being named the Germantown Legends 'Player of the Month' for November 2015.

PLAYING FOR KICKS WITH ABBY WAMBACH

When Kyndel Henager was 9 years old, she got her first taste of the excitement of U.S. Women's National team while she watched the US play for the 2011 Women’s World Cup.  As we watched the Championship match with our faces painted, Kyndel cheered on the team and her new hero, Abby Wambach.

Kendal Henager with Abby Wambach.

Flash-forward four years – Kyndel had just gotten to see the newly crowned World Champs play a friendly in Birmingham, AL when we got news of Abby’s Play For Kicks charity which raises money for soccer programs all over the country.  Kyndel pitched in and raised $500. Her reward was the opportunity of a lifetime – she spent a morning playing soccer with Abby at a clinic and luncheon in Nashville. Abby was amazing working with all the kids and even complimented Kyndel on her hair (cut short just like Abby’s!).  Kyndel had a great time, learned some new skills, and came home even more excited about soccer. It was a day she’ll never forget!

Photos from the event can be found HERE.

About the Playing for Kicks Program
Tennessee State Soccer Association players have a new friend, All-Time goal scorer and 2015 World Cup champion, Abby Wambach.  Abby is a five-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award, 2012 FIFA Woman’s Player of the Year winner and 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist.  Wambach, along with TSSA, has launched a fun fundraiser to benefit the TOPSoccer and Soccer Across America programs.  Players who raised $250 met Abby for pictures and an autograph, attended a Q&A, and had lunch with Abby!

In advance of the event, Abby Wambach stated, “I’m thrilled to team up with the Tennessee State Soccer Association to raise both money and awareness for TOPSoccer and Soccer Across America.  I can’t wait to meet the young soccer players of Tennessee on November 21!”
