Sam Reddick Awarded Coolidge Scholarship

Date Posted: 11/15/2016

Sam Reddick, a senior at Evangelical Christian School and captain for three seasons for the Germantown Legends Black U19 team, was recently selected as an inaugural recipient of the prestigious Coolidge Scholarship. Among the nation's most generous scholarships, the Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, non-partisan, merit award covering a student's tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study and leadership training. Unlike many other full-ride scholarships, the Coolidge Scholarship may be used by recipients at any accredited college or university in the United States.

"On behalf of the Coolidge Foundation, it is my pleasure to share the news of Samuel Reddick's selection as a Coolidge Scholar. As you may know, the Coolidge Scholarship is among the most generous of all scholarships for undergraduate study in America. It is a full-ride award for four years and can be used at any accredited college or university in America. More than 2,300 top high school juniors from around America applied for The Coolidge in this inaugural year. But clearly Sam stood out as the best of the best. He was selected on merit for his many accomplishments -- both at Evangelical Christian School and in the broader community" - Matthew Denhart, Executive Director of the Coolidge Foundation.

Sam is one of three Coolidge Scholars selected this year. A dedicated student, the 17 year-old hopes to study medicine. Sam has participated in the conference of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Diego and is spent his second summer volunteering for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He also leads a weekly Bible study for middle school boys, volunteers with children's ministry at church, and tutors younger students in Latin, science, and mathematics.

Additionally, Sam is a founding member of Shelby County Mayor's Youth Council, plays first chair French horn in the concert band, competes in Knowledge Bowl, serves as president of the National Honor Society, and has competed in the National School Scrabble Championship in Washington, D.C.

Sam also plays center-back for the ECS varsity soccer team, which went all the way to the state finals this spring. In May, Sam was named "Defensive Player of the Year," and he has previously received the "Dr. Kenneth Groshart Award" for being the player who best demonstrates the ECS mission.

In addition to ECS soccer, Sam is a certified USSF Grade 8 referee.

About the Coolidge Scholarship

The Coolidge Scholarship was established by the Coolidge Foundation to honor America's thirtieth president and to elevate the values for which President Coolidge stood. Amity Shlaes, Coolidge biographer and Coolidge Foundation chairman said, "Coolidge is a president little-known by many Americans today. But his example of principled, civil leadership is a model that could guide our country."

The main criterion that distinguishes Coolidge Scholars is academic merit. Students must also demonstrate a keen interest in public policy, an appreciation for the values Coolidge championed, humility and leadership potential. More than 2,350 students from 48 different states applied for the Coolidge Scholarship in this inaugural year.
